Mein Schatz

Radio play on femicide from German public broadcaster ARD

Notes

I was touched by a few moments in this radio play.

One was the “separation dialogue” between the partners, when the woman told her partner that she had enough of him controlling her – smartphone, bags, relationships with others.

Another was the moment when the murdered woman was discovered, such a deep mourning.

And yet another was the way, the killer presented himself as a victim – that she had attacked him and that he had loved her, and and and … and the police just being a silent witness to this.

At the root what is called “patriarchal” in this play and in general is a power structure, blind to the need for respect of self and others and failing to acknowledge the interdependent nature of our lives. These needs cannot be fulfilled without true communication. This includes that everybody in a process can and will say their truth and that everybody is also heard in that truth. Free speech is meaningless, if there is no true receiving of what is being said. We can watch any talk show to see how little connection is made between political opponents.

We can learn to do this better.
